The Story Of How I Became A Seafarer

sea

KUKU is my name. I am 34 years old with dual nationality. I leave with my grandma. Life has been very hard for us since my parents died in a car accident. To survive, I hard to do mundane deeds to many people, just to eat and sustain my grandma. Although I studied till high school it was near to impossible to find a suitable job; as boss just cares about how much you bring them without caring of the damage they cause you. The is nothing holy or glorious about my story. Two years later my grandma passed away and I was left all alone. It was funny at first to realize how hopeless, I was at the moment. As the saying goes, when the world turns you back on you, you turn your back on the world. So I stood and wiped up my tears and envision myself rich in a mini-mansion at least. The next day, I decided to sell the family house, I inherited from my parents to start a business. At the Real estate company, I visited that day, I meet a long line of people who also came to trade. Among those people, they were this big gang all in black that were quarreling over a certain property which was quite hilarious since it was of no profit in the long run. I listen attentively and someone mentions a lot of money for such a miserable property; Wow, how the rich just say whatever they feel like this day. I decided to interfere with them hoping to at least get a decent selling price. So I targeted a plain simple-looking person among them all. He was smart and took the necessary time to listen to my proposal. Without saying much, he calls on one of his men. I was scared he calls him to knock me out but the bodyguard brought a suitcase and told me this is the re-compensation for your property. I was so happy for, I felt it was a lot of money so I didn't open the case and we sign the ownership proposer. We shook hands and I left home. Oh, I just sold my home, how can I be going back there.

I rented a one-bedroom with a bath for a month to give me time to think of my next move. With the huge amount of money, I have now, I can do anything within my reach, but all actions come at a cost. To start a business was my first idea, but to register a business and make it grow takes time and a lot of money which might overwhelm me in the future and also I need someone I could trust for we to woke hand in hand which as I already know will end in disagreement and betrayer. Weeks pass like a walk downtown.

On my last week of the month, I got hungry doing nothing. I went for a walk to relieve my boredom. The was an old and who was telling a story of a rescue accident that occurred at Sea from a Newspaper which drew my attention as it reminded me of my parent’s car accident. He keeps on saying, it's not over till it's over and each time, I felt a pain in my heart that reminded me of when I was a little kid whenever, I felt this way, it only meant, I could do something about it. I left then carrying that old man's word to heart. I search for the best Marine training schools in the world and my zone as well; to see which I could afford and complete with no problem at the site. Later that week, found Three. Took the one with the best recommendation and experience getting training. It was a risk, I was willing to take and pour myself all into. I registered online and was offered admission four weeks later and one before the academy reopens its doors. As any good student with a success will over. I reshape myself to be humble, obedient, and most of all God-fearing.

My first year as a cadet was the hardest physical, mental, and spiritual breaking and rebuilding of my self-esteem. The second-year was more or less the same but, I was no longer a rookie. I got the chance to do three to four internships in two different shipping companies. As for my third and fourth year, it was really difficult, so I made more time to study and digest the material step by step. The degree certificate was handed in during my graduation. I went back to the companies which took me for an internship and deposited my curriculum vitae. A week later one of the companies call me and asked me to come for an interview. So I wore my most responsible dress and went over. At the company gate one of the Captains call upon me and asked angrily, why are you wearing such formal wear. Go and change already and get to work. I quickly understood what he implied by that and change to dark-blue overall and was appointed to work under the guidance of a superior mate. With my discharge book and any other document needed to sail, I began my first official journey as a seafarer. You know the rest... As I said before, the is nothing holy or glorious about my story for all I have was not given but earn by the sweat and frustration of a little boy.

An attempt to a port with no documents

Most people in this generation think that without the right documents or requirements they can't have access to what they want. Even though they might find something more important than what they are looking for on the way. Regardless, it's true but to an extent that can only be determined by the situation and character of the person at stake. “ Not long ago, I decided to go visit the port of Ghana for an internship program to cover the practical side of my course as a to-be Seafarer. I mailed the port for the recommendations but I wasn't emailed back. So I asked my seniors for advice which they gave me happily. I required just a school note which contained my name, course, level of education, and the signature of the vice-chancellor. I made a copy and deposited it at the post office.     The next day, my elder brother sent me a message to come and collect a package which he deposited at the port for me. On my way to the port, they were so many roads to ...
