CRANEAGE OPERATION PROCEDURE & SAFETY MEASURES

Have you ever been on a vessel with a crane? Even if so, this article might be enlightening to you. ship cranes are all the same except in terms of capacity, as some outperform others.

Modern-day cargo vessels and some tug boats have cranes installed on them due to the need to load and offload material from one ship to another without any incident. That's why we have crane officers who use the so-called sign language International known in the marine industry in operation with the crane operator as a guide on how to execute a successful craneage operation.

3.1 some problems encountered Before the craneage operation

Before any operation is usually carried out, a toolbox talk is carried on to discuss with the team involved on how they will carry out the job with respect to the JHA (Job hazards analysis) and how to avoid or prevent them or how to move on in case it still occurs. The job is analyzed most of the time based on; health, efficiency, and effectiveness, sanitation, proper or complete PPE's, and any life safety equipment needed due to weather conditions.

3.2 Application of JHA and solutions in Craneage operation (During)

During the craneage operation, only those that are properly still should be within the operational zone. The crane operator should be able to understand and execute all craneage sign language practices given by the crane officer of his vessel before and after the command is handed over to another vessel's crane officer. The package should be well lashed by the operation team then hook to the crane for its transportation. Most of the time due to the tension in the area where the hold and crane hook meet. The is always a possibility of breakage because;

1. The containment was over loaded

2. The containment material is weak

3. The containment material has corroded due to the effect of acid of flammable chemicals.

In such cases, it's preferable to reduce the number of materials in the containment or better still double the containment materials.

3.3 Application after the craneage operation is maintenance checks such as if the hydraulic system is experiencing leakage.

  2. Hello, I for one have worked with a crane officer and it's not an all talk as you say it is. Six people died during one of our crane operation in south Korea and over twenty where injured when a crane collapsed at a Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

An attempt to a port with no documents

Most people in this generation think that without the right documents or requirements they can't have access to what they want. Even though they might find something more important than what they are looking for on the way. Regardless, it's true but to an extent that can only be determined by the situation and character of the person at stake. “ Not long ago, I decided to go visit the port of Ghana for an internship program to cover the practical side of my course as a to-be Seafarer. I mailed the port for the recommendations but I wasn't emailed back. So I asked my seniors for advice which they gave me happily. I required just a school note which contained my name, course, level of education, and the signature of the vice-chancellor. I made a copy and deposited it at the post office.     The next day, my elder brother sent me a message to come and collect a package which he deposited at the port for me. On my way to the port, they were so many roads to ...
